Fall is the most perfect time of the year in Arizona. It starts the beginning of patio season, comfortable hot air balloon rides, enjoyable hikes and walks, cozy clothes, and actually getting outside to do things! Our population also doubles in size during fall and winter when the Snowbirds come back for their winter home. We also don’t sweat to death walking from the car to a store, which is always pleasant!
After a year of very few events, I’m happy to say, events are back on this fall in Arizona. While we don’t get the typical fall colors from the changing leaves here in the Phoenix Valley, up in Northern Arizona these are a staple as well as cooler temperatures. Pumpkin Patches, State Fair, Brewery and Food festivals, and so much more are returning this year to Arizona. Whether you are local to Arizona, visiting for the first time, a Snowbird, or a kid, there’s something for everyone here this fall and I can’t wait to share it all with you!
Fall Events In Arizona
The Chandler Chamber of Commerce Ostrich Festival
The Chandler Chamber of Commerce Ostrich Festival began in 1988 based on Chandler’s colorful early history of ostrich ranching. The event has grown into one of the premier festivals in the southwest. The Ostrich Festival features family-friendly ostrich-themed activities, national and regional entertainment, carnival midway, spectacular food, and upscale arts & crafts. This is an annual event which makes its return this year and promises to make you not miss last years festival! While I’ve never taken the family to this, it sounds like a great time with live music and a kids zone with all the games! (If you follow along on Instagram, you will know what I mean! We are a big carnival/Midway game family!) Tickets start at $20 for adults, $15 for children and seniors, and the family pack for 4 is $125. You can also check out the VIP option.
Fairmont Princess Pumpkin Nights
Back again for another round, Pumpkin Fest at The Princess is fun for all ages! This event transforms the beautiful Fairmont Princess in Scottsdale, AZ into a spooky fall wonderland! Enjoy some spiced or spiked 🙂 cider and then wander up to your room as the cool fall air hits.
Stroll through the resort, stop for photo opportunities, ride the carnival rides, be brave and go through the Hay Maze, pick your best pumpkin in the pumpkin patch, and enjoy a skeleton song through Mystic Passage to complete your Pumpkin Experience at The Princess. Be quick though! This event takes place on Saturday, October 29th from 8 pm – 2 am and will sell out!
Mac Donald’s Ranch and Pumpkin Patch
If you are looking for a fun experience for the family, head over to Mac Donald Ranch. They have a cute little petting zoo, a playground for kids, Mechanical Bull, Pony Rides, pedal cars, gold panning, Barrel Train, corn mazes, Caterpillar Bounce, and a prepicked pumpkin patch. They even do horseback riding lessons if you want to knock out all the fall activities in one day.
You will find many western games, a western town, and great places to take photos at Mac Donald’s Ranch and family farm. It is in the middle of the desert, so it’s cute to have a little fall with a little desert reminder along with the friendly horses. Check out tickets here. Pumpkin Patch is open October 1-31 and they close at 6 pm daily, with the exception of Tuesday they are closed all day.
Schnepf Farms Pumpkin and Chili Party
If you are up for a drive down to Queen Creek from October 1-31, amongst all the farmland, you will find this fall treasure. This place reminds me the most of the fall festivals and parties we would have back in Indiana where I grew up. Activities include chili, pumpkins, a kids playground, petting zoos, a corn maze, hay rides, ropes course, ziplines, roller coaster, rock wall, and it’s very family friendly. If you are looking for a spooky adventure with your friends, or significant other, hop aboard the nightmare bus, titled “The Wreckoning” if you dare! They have many food options, local vendors and the best kettle corn I’ve found! We’ve only been once as a family as it’s kind of a far drive for us, but if we lived closer, I’d do this one a lot more!
Schnepf Farms Bakery Pick Up — A few of their yummy options!
Schnepf Farms is family owned and operated, the largest Peach grower in the state of Arizona, and is open 10 months a year. You can host special events like weddings, family reunions, corporate outings, to name a few at Schnepf. They have a year round “You Pick” Garden and some of the best pies, maybe even better than Grandma’s, in their Country Store. They have even added online ordering if you would like to skip the picking and simply pick up. If you want to go glamping in a restored vintage camper trailer, you can now do so at Schnepf Farms as well! Check that out here. Tickets start around $24 per person for a single day or $79 per person for the entire festival to use any day you like.
Arizona State Fair
Our absolute favorite activity to do as a family in the fall, which we do every year (minus 2020 because it wasn’t the same), is visit the Arizona State Fair. We always try to get there first thing in the morning to beat traffic on the weekends and leave before it gets too crazy late in the day. It’s not a far drive for us in Phoenix, but we like to beat the crowds, enjoy all the fried food vendors, have a few drinks, see some animals, hit the carnival Midway games, watch the eating contests, and then head out for the day. If you are close to Phoenix, AZ, this is a must visit!
This year, the state fair is open September 23 through October 30, Thursdays through Sundays, and you can get your tickets here. Starting again this year, 2022, live music will return.Ticket prices start at $10 and go up to $15 and kids 5 and under are free. I love to see what chocolate or dessert item they can create that is deep fried to perfection, making it better than the normal item! This free, family-friendly event is an absolute joy and you HAVE to see it!
Boo and Brew
Boo & Brew has a wide variety of fun for everyone, so bring your family and your pups and celebrate Fall at Scottsdale Quarter. Wander the pumpkin patch, beverage garden, and enjoy music, food, art, crafts and more! In celebration of the completion of the final phase of Scottsdale Quarter, Boo and Brew is one of the final events of the weeklong celebration titled, Boo & New at the Quarter.
Join in the fun with live entertainment, fall themed activities, family fun, local art, and of course, if you choose, shopping! Bring your pup, your kids, your family, or yourself! Grab a ticket for $10 for 3, 12 oz craft brews before the prices go up!
Kierland Commons Oktoberwest
As a family, we love visiting Kierland Commons. Previously, we experienced their KierlandPOP outdoor festival, which was fun for the whole family. This year, Kierland is hosting a one-of-a-kind experience called Oktoberwest. This event is a western-inspired take on the traditional Oktoberfest festivities and should be fun for all age groups. You can expect music from the best of West, tons of food trucks with mouth-watering options, line-dancing, corn-hole, and so much more. Plus, beer, wine, cocktails, and more. And, there will even be a mechanical bull – so fun! Grab your favorite Fall sweater and some comfy Fall sneakers and get ready to dance the night away. Oktoberwest will take place on October 15, 2022 from 4 pm – 10 pm and tickets start at $45 per person.
Arizona Fall Festival
Arizona Fall Fest runs on November 9, 2024 from 10-4 at Margaret T. Hance Park. This event hosted by Local First Arizona is the perfect event for families, food lovers, and anyone looking to support local businesses this fall. This festival celebrates Arizona’s local businesses and the season’s best offerings for all to enjoy. Get ready for a super fun day with a wide range of local restaurants and food trucks, artisan booths, live music, and activities for all ages. It’s free to attend, and all you need to bring is a good appetite and your smile!
Flagstaff Oktoberfest
Flagstaff’s Oktoberfest is a unique event that blends traditional Bavarian celebration with a twist. In addition to the famous Stein Holding Competition, this event features a variety of activities like a bratwurst-eating contest, polka music, local craft beer from Arizona breweries, food trucks, and SO MUCH MORE. It’s an incredibly fun and lively day for all ages, with a kids’ area and the iconic “Kiddie Stein Race” for little ones. Entry is only $10 and kiddos under 12 are free!

Located only a two-hour drive away from Phoenix, Prescott is where Western culture and modern living meet.
Famous for its live music venues, its historic Whiskey Row, and its lively bars, the nightlife in Prescott is renowned for being seriously epic. If you’re into history, you’ll find yourself in heaven here. As the entire place is dotted with museums and historic buildings that tell the stories of the area’s past.

Hundreds of millions of years ago, heavy floods brought logs into the area. Volcanic activity later buried the dead logs underground. And as time went by, they were crystallized by ash and re-exposed over the ground.

From the gunfight at the O.K. Corral to the historic Birdcage Theatre, Tombstone has been a fixture of American history since 1879. The town was originally founded by prospectors seeking gold and silver in the area’s hills—but it was also home to one of the most notorious shootouts in U.S. history. In 1881, two feuding groups faced off over a disagreement about water rights at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone’s main street—and it didn’t end well for any of them!
Tombstone is located in Cochise County, just north of Tucson and south of Bisbee on Highway 80 between Benson and Willcox. It’s only about an hour from both Tucson International Airport (TIA) and Sky Harbor Airport (PHX).
7. Winslow
Winslow was put on the map for its feature on the Eagles’ ‘Take It Easy’ song. Which made it a famous stop on Arizona’s Route 66.
Winslow’s days of glory may be in the past now. But visiting it for a day is still a pretty charming experience. The entire town is dotted with historical sites and its outskirts are lined by pretty interesting attractions. Including various petroglyph sites and the best-conserved meteor crater in the world!
Moreover, if you’re a fan of rock’n’roll, make sure to also check out the town’s most iconic corner. The exact one mentioned in the Eagles song! Here, you can also see the Glenn Frey statue. Which was placed right there for visitors to come and pay tribute.
8. Sedona
Sedona is your go-to for all things desert magic, making it a wonderful day trip to take from Phoenix if you want to get away from the bustle and hustle of the city and surround yourself with striking landscapes of towering desert spires, mazes of red rock formations, and sweeping river canyons.
While visiting, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to picking what to see and do. Activities in Sedona range from hiking in the desert to exploring ancient cultures, and checking out the town’s art scene. Or taking part in tons of outdoorsy activities that provide a perfect blend of nature and cultural heritage. Of all the must-see spots in Sedona, I highly recommend checking out Oak Creek Canyon and Cathedral Rock. The natural beauty is truly breathtaking.
9. Grand Canyon National Park
There are many ways to describe the Grand Canyon. Some might call it a natural wonder of the world—and they’d be right. Others might call it a must-see attraction if you’re planning a trip to Phoenix, Arizona. But I think the best way to describe this iconic landmark is as an experience that’s worth every second of your time.
This national park attracts 4 million visitors every year, so you can expect a crowd. But when you’re surrounded by such breathtaking views, even the crowds won’t bother you.
If you’re planning a trip to the Grand Canyon, I recommend heading for the South Rim. Grand Canyon South Rim is the most popular spot in the park because it offers the iconic views that most people will only ever see in a photograph. From the South Rim you can take in the incredible scenery from nearly two dozen viewpoints, including a couple with views all the way down into the heart of the canyon.
The South Rim is great for first time visitors because it has several services and activities available. You’ll have easy access to the museum, the Grand Canyon IMAX Experience, shops, Grand Canyon Railway, and a ton of information at the visitor center.
If you’re interested in hiking, be sure to check out Bright Angle Trail and Horseshoe Mesa Trail. These two trails are short and easy—perfect for first-time hikers.
Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or both—you’ll find it at the Grand Canyon National Park!
10. Tortilla Flat
If you are looking for a scenic drive where you can take a dip in the lake, enjoy a picnic by the water. And even check out the coolest little self-sustaining town, look no further than Tortilla Flat. Tucked away in the mountains passed Superstition Springs Mountains, after 146 turns, you will find Tortilla Flat.
On your way to Tortilla Flat, be sure to stop in and check out Goldfield, an old mining ghost town, Lost Dutchman State Park, and Superstition Springs Mountain for hiking and to also give your legs a little stretch.
Apache Junction has so many cute stops along the way as well if you want to see things from yesteryear. Not to mention the views are so incredible! Apache Junction is also the starting point of the Apache Trail scenic drive. While taking the 42 mile drive down the Apache Trail you’ll pass Canyon Lake. Canyon Lake is a stunning desert lake with multiple marinas, beach areas, and RV parks.
During the busy season, Tortilla Flat is really busy during 12-3. So come between 10-12 and after 3 until the town closes at 6 so there’s less waiting.
When you first arrive in Tortilla Flat, you will find yourself with a row of building on the right side of the road.
If you are coming during the slower or less busy times, between the end of April and to the beginning of October, you will see the Mercantile first. Then you will see the post office. You can send letters and packages as it is an actual working post office. Next, be sure you stop in the bathrooms, even if you don’t need to. The bathrooms have been updated and have special characters hand-painted you don’t want to miss.
Next, when you are ready to nosh, head into the restaurant.
And during the nicer times of the year, you can order your food and enjoy a local band on the patio. You can also find dollar bills people have left as part of a travel memory so you can also leave your mark inside the restaurant or the gelato shop right next to the patio. If you have your four-legged friends traveling with you, order from the patio and sit on the picnic tables with umbrellas.
All around the town, you will find picture opportunities and items that have been donated to the town for display.
Moving on down the way, you will find a shop filled with gelato made in-house, local food items, and travel souvenirs. I highly recommend the Prickly Pear, it’s delicious!
Right past the gelato shop, you will find a replica of the schoolhouse that existed in 1920 where the museum is now housed.
Make sure to sign the guest book as you never know when they will make the next wallpaper and display your name on the wall! Learn about the flood which washed out the town and caused a rebuild where it is located today. You can also find out which building burnt and had to be rebuilt and which president visited the town inside the museum.
And just as you are at the edge of town, be sure to hop in the jail and figure out the puzzle to escape!
It will be the first time you are encouraged to escape! Feel free to let your kids also try and run off some energy in town.
When Is The Best Time To Visit Phoenix?
The best time to visit Phoenix is during the spring (March to May) or fall (September to November). During spring and fall, the temperatures are mild. It can get extremely hot during the summer and it tends to rain the most during the winter. That said, there’s really no bad time to visit Phoenix as long as you are prepared.

Wondering what to wear in Arizona in winter? I’ve got you covered! As a native to cold weather climates, I didn’t think I would ever need a winter coat living in the desert. Owning and managing short term rentals has opened my eyes to a whole world of people asking me what to pack, how the weather is, where things are located, what the best place for food and drinks are, where to take their kids, and many more questions. This is one topic I love talking about because it ties all of the things I do together!
If you didn’t know, Arizona has a winter. And it snows and rains much like everywhere else in the world. We get down to freezing temps at night, and usually up in the 50s or 60s during the day. People come and swim in pools with heaters, ski up north, go hiking around the city, run without breaking too much of a sweat, and walk in peace. Our girls are in club swimming and they swim year round outside. Thus, a parka and winter boots are needed for early morning swim meets — things I NEVER thought I’d wear outside of the Midwest!
What To Wear In Arizona In Winter
Winter Temperatures in Arizona
The winters of Arizona are pleasant for most parts. The temperature during winter mostly ranges from 25-45 degrees Fahrenheit with an average maximum of around 60 degrees Fahrenheit. This is because the elevation of the state ranges between 1400 to 5000 feet above sea level, which acts as a climatic control for this part of the country by cooling down summers. And not allowing the temperature to go up during winters. The elevations are the reason for the difference in temperature pattern of winter between Arizona and its neighboring states of California, Nevada, Utah and New Mexico.
Snowfall is rarely seen in most parts of Arizona with exception of Flagstaff where it can reach 2 feet on average per season if not more. This is also the only place where winters can feel colder than in other parts of Arizona. However, in Tucson and Phoenix, the lowest temperature that has been recorded during winter is around -9 degrees Fahrenheit in all likelihood. And hence there is no need to take any special precautions for clothing in these two cities. It should be noted that in higher elevations like Flagstaff and Payson, the chances of getting significant amount of snowfall is high. And hence it becomes necessary to take precautions for proper winter clothing so as to be safe from the cold climate.
In terms of dressing up, there is not much difference in what you may normally wear during winters anywhere else in the country since Arizona’s temperatures are pretty moderate.
The only thing that you need to take care of is the fact that the nights are much colder than the days in this region. So dress appropriately for your nighttime activities. Also, it should be noted that while wearing light colors like white during winter might keep you warm, it also makes you more susceptible to dust and other outdoor elements. So choose carefully what you wear.
For most parts of Arizona, the winter months are very comfortable and unless you are one of those people who gets cold very easily, there is hardly any requirement for residents to invest in winter clothing, such as jackets and sweaters etc. This does not mean that such items should never be bought because it will get cold at night.
I always recommend a light jacket or sweater for the night because when the sun goes down, there’s no heat. It’s important to remember this when you start packing, especially if you plan to travel to see what all of Arizona has to offer, like the Grand Canyon and many of the National Parks for hiking.

Casual Dresses
A casual dress is always a staple in the packing list because it can be worn in so many ways. You can wear it in the morning under a sweater or with a coat. And dress it up at night when you want to go out. I love to throw on a hat to help block the super bright sun during the day and also add a little to the look. If you want to pack only 1-2 pairs of shoes, you can pair your casual dress with a pair of hiking or combat boots and save room in your suitcase.
Make sure to pack long and short-sleeved dresses to wear throughout the day and night. You can mix a dress with a fleece jacket or a sweater because the temps allow in the morning and night. During the day, you can opt for a lighter option, or the dress alone.
Sunscreen
Hold up, don’t forget the sunscreen! Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean those rays from the desert sun won’t find their way to your skin. So slap on some SPF and protect yourself from the sun’s sneaky tricks. Wear sunscreen often if you don’t want to end up looking like a lobster, trust me on this one.
Fleece Jacket with Tank Top and flip flops for day or hiking boots for the trail
A fleece jacket is always a staple for early mornings and late evenings. They are warm enough to cut the wind and cold. But light enough to get the job done when temps get into the 60s with sun during the day. And if you pair it with a short sleeve shirt or a tank top, it’s the right amount of warm and cool. You can even use this as a hiking outfit with leggings and boots or casual with flip flops or sneakers. Dress this outfit up by trading in the leggings for a pair of vegan leather joggers like the ones I’ve included in the photo. You will have a bit of texture and shine while keeping you comfy and chic for any event you attend! During the day, you can also ditch the fleece but keep it nearby for later in the evening!
Long sleeved tops and Joggers or Jeans for day time and also night layered with a coat
I don’t know about you, but I love to be comfy, no matter the time of day. The whole notion of Zoom meetings has brought on the ability to have a nice top on and have comfy pants, which I’m a fan of. So I love to wear a jogger or even jeans as a pant. And pair it with a nice white button-down, which looks very professional and presentable yet gives the comfort I’m looking for. You can mix and match these items with a fleece jacket or light coat for evening to dress it up or make it feel casual and warm. Grab a pair of sneakers to keep your feet warm when you are out and about. But for sure put on the slippers or flip flops when you are home! Scarves and Beanies
Who says winter fashion in Arizona can’t be stylish? Add some pizzazz to your outfit with a stylish scarf and a cute beanie. Not only will they keep your neck and head cozy, but they can also add a pop of color or pattern to your overall ensemble. Plus, you can pretend you’re a chic desert explorer while sipping hot cocoa by the fire. Fashion and warmth? Sign me up!
Tee shirts and jeans with flip flops and sneakers
The winter time of the year is still good to wear flip flops during the day and sneakers in morning and night. The perfect pairing is with a tee and some jeans. You can throw on a jacket or sweater on early mornings and cold nights to keep the chill away. As well as easily shedding layers when you go inside to warmer places. This outfit lends itself to easily running errands. Taking the kids or dog on a walk, or even heading to a casual lunch or dinner with a friend. Jeans are a must for any packing list when visiting Arizona. Because they are a staple in any winter wardrobe cold or warm. Alternatively, you could pop on a skirt and wear booties with a tee shirt for a warmer day. And keep a sweater or jacket close by. This is a great option especially if you are going to lunch or even a work meeting when you don’t have to be outside a lot and can change for the evening temperatures.
Faux Leather Leggings and tee or sweater
By far, my most worn outfit of all of winter, because it’s so versatile. Spanx and other brands of faux leather leggings can be dressed up with some heels. Or even made casual with hiking boots and sneakers to hike the red rocks. They get me from drop off to late nights of swim practice. And everything in between with a sweater and a t-shirt. I love how they hold me in but also how they actually can help keep you warm. Sometimes more-so than jeans. You could even wear them to go skiing up north because they are so well made. Start your day with leggings, a sweater, and some boots. Hit mid day and shed the sweater or jacket and switch for sneakers or flip flops. And then finish the day with another sweater or jacket, and some heels for dinner and drinks.
Hiking Shoes
If you plan on exploring Arizona’s beautiful landscapes and hitting up those hiking trails, a good pair of hiking shoes is a must. Trust me, your feet will thank you for the support and grip they provide. Plus, they’ll keep your tootsies safe from any prickly cacti you might encounter along the way!

This outfit makes it easy to look put together or get out the door asap with a few simple things. You could pack only faux leather leggings in your suitcase and wear them daily. And for going out and never have the same outfit. Make sure you own at least one pair of the Spanx leggings. They are worth EVERY penny! I own nearly every pair they make and love them all equally. And are the most worn pants in my closet. They also work for warmer days as well as cooler days depending on the top and shoe you choose to wear.
Snug Socks
Finally, don’t forget about your precious feet! Treat them right with some snug socks. Look for pairs made from cozy materials like wool or thermal blends. Not only will they keep your piggies warm and happy, but they’ll also make sure your feet are ready for any hiking adventures or walks through picturesque Arizona towns.
