How to Style a Kimono

How to Style a Kimono

A kimono is one of those wardrobe pieces you can never have enough of, and is always in style. Not just in spring and summer. I wanted to share the top ways on how to style a kimono so you can always have some fresh ideas in your arsenal to use the clothes you have or might invest in. I usually toss one in my bag when we go to dinner because the girls get cold inside with the air conditioning.

Yes, I said invest because when I buy something, I want it to stay around a long time and have multiple uses out of it. A kimono is one of the pieces you can wear year round, and with multiple outfits, so I consider them a major closet staple and investment piece. They are super easy to layer and add to an outfit as a statement, even in the fall and winter.

How to Style a Kimono

What is a kimono?

If you are unfamiliar with what a kimono is, here’s a little background on it. The kimono is a traditional piece of clothing in Japanese culture that is a T shape. It is flat and has square sleeves and a rectangle body. Think of the attire Sumo Wrestlers wear – this is a Kimono robe. This traditional Japanese garment is meant to be worn with a belt, but in modern times, they are flowy and often worn unbelted and open. There are many different length kimonos, and they come in any type of fabric. Earning them the title of: great layering pieces. I generally think of them as a boho piece of clothing, not as much as I relate them to Japanese culture. Below, we’ll talk about the different ways you can wear a kimono if you are new to this clothing trend.

Are Kimonos Still Fashionable

The short answer? YES! Kimonos are in this season (for both men and women!), and if the fashion experts have predicted correctly, they will be in style for a least a couple more years. Fashion is fluid, but Kimonos are here to stay for a while.

And no wonder, because they are comfy and stylish all at once. Although the traditional Japanese Kimono is meant to be worn on special occasions like weddings and tea ceremonies, Western culture has adapted this style and continues to pay homage to this unique look..

Ways to style a kimono

The first and probably most used way I wear a kimono is as a swim cover up. Living in Arizona where it’s hot more than it’s cold, having a few to rotate is best. On the cooler days and nights, a graphic tee, a pair of ankle high leather boots, and a kimono with jeans is perfect!

But, of course, the girls always want to have a swim day. So I want to focus on some summer outfits that you can add a kimono too. And in summer, anything more than a light cover up kimono and swimmie will cause severe sweating!

As A Kimono Swim Cover Up
How to style a kimono

This goes for one piece suits as well as bikinis. I like to pack extra kimonos when I travel because they usually double as a cover up and towel, as many have fabric which can tie into a bow/knot.

Sometimes, as a mom, I don’t always get to wear the kimono, because a child gets cold, or needs head cover, so they work well in this case. I do love to have a variety of lengths for a cover up depending on where we are. I generally wear maxi kimonos because they usually are pretty and can double for a dress.

How to style a kimonoAs A Kimono Wrap Dress

It may seem like a theme here, but we have to get creative when the heat comes in summer. A traditional kimono is a cover up dress. Therefore, many kimonos are thicker, have enough fabric and a belt to tie, or something similar that makes a dress.

An easy way to make a dress out of a kimono is to wrap one side of the opening across your body to the other and close the open side to make it a wrap dress and secure closed with a belt. These work the best with long kimonos, but if you are brave and want to try it with a shorter one, go for it! Generally, I wear a bandeau top or a bralette and bikini undies in case an accidental wardrobe malfunction happened 🤪

As A Kimono Jacket

When the temps are warm outside but cooler inside, or vice versa in the spring/fall a lightweight How to style a kimonokimono is a perfect layer to keep you warm or cool without being too much. If you are going to be in the sun for long periods of time and want to add an additional layer to protect from the sun, a kimono is a great jacket since it generally covers a large portion of your body.

As I mentioned a bit ago, these also work great for when you go to dinner and need a sweater or jacket to throw or on your bag for warmth or sun blocking. You can find short and long sleeved kimonos to make it work for almost any weather.

Best Kimonos

Here are a few of my favorite types of Kimonos. While they’re not the exact one’s I’ve featured in the outfits below, they are all really similar!

Dreamy Island Vibes Chiffon Kimono

I love this Kimono from Windsor. The light and flowy material means you can wear this on your next brunch outing, as your next bathing suit cover up, or even an adorable nightgown that makes you feel beautiful and confident. You can find Windsor products online, or at the Scottsdale Fashion Square. More on my favorite places to shop in Scottsdale, here.

Floral Print Chainjoy Kimono

This Kimono is perfect for Summer and Spring, overtop any white tank top or t-shirt. But, don’t count it out for Fall and Winter just yet. Throw this floral kimono over a long-sleeve top of any floral color, then add your leggings and knee-high boots and you’ve got the perfect outfit for the cooler weather.

Black Bsubseach Kimono

Now here is a kimono that can go anywhere and do anything. From a beach coverup to a cardigan to a dress, this black Kimono is a super versatile peice. One you want to add to your wardrobe asap, because it makes creating outfits that much easier.

Black Tie-Dye Bsubseach Kimono

Here’s another kimono from Bsubseach because it just love the length and style of these. Not to mention, they come at a great price! Black and white are such classic colors, it makes it even easier to pair this Kimono with your other wardrobe staples. For an added pop of color, add a colored belt to your Kimono outfit. Think pink, baby blue, yellow, or red.

Vintage Floral SweatyRocks Kimono

I love the almost tribal print look of this Kimono. Not only is it super cute, but its warm and its the perfect mix of Fall colors. Pair with high-waisted white jeans and your favorite matching top for a perfect Fall outfit. Now theres an outfit fit for anything from errands to your next family gathering.

Kimono Outfit Ideas

Now that you know my favorite ways to wear and style a kimono, let’s take a look at what those ideas look like as an actual outfit. Don’t be afraid to wear your kimono as a street style, with a pair of skinny jeans or denim shorts, or as a kimono jacket. You literally can’t go wrong with a kimono!

Get summer-ready! Add a kimono to your style ASAP!

Well, there you have it – my top tips for styling a kimono!

Whether you’re dressing it up for a special occasion or throwing it on over jeans and a t-shirt for a casual day out, a kimono is a versatile and stylish addition to any wardrobe. I hope these ideas have inspired you to experiment with your own kimono outfits and find new ways to make this classic piece your own.

From Festivals to Weather: Best Time to Visit the Big Island of Hawaii

When planning a trip to any of the islands in Hawaii, it’s important to consider the best time to visit based on your interests. If you’re looking to save money and avoid crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of April to May or September to November. During these months, the weather is still warm and sunny, but there are fewer tourists on the island and discounts on accommodations and activities may be available.

For all of the beach lovers and water sports enthusiasts, the summer months of June to August are the perfect time to visit. The weather is hot and dry, making it ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and surfing. However, keep in mind that this is also the peak tourist season, so prices may be higher and popular attractions more crowded.

If you’re interested in hiking and exploring the island’s natural wonders, the cooler and wetter months of December to March may be the best time to visit. While the rain can make hiking trails more challenging, it also means that the waterfalls are flowing and the landscapes are lush and green.

No matter what your priorities and preferences are, there is a time of year that can cater to your needs.

The 3 Best Planners for Mental Health: How to Organize and Prioritize Your Life

It’s important to keep a check on your healthcare journey, mentally, physically, and spiritually. The daily pressures of work and life can take a major toll on us. It’s important to remember to eat healthy meals regularly, and practice gratitude, as well as other positive mental, physical, and spiritual health care practices. Not taking care of yourself can cause increased anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. A planner can help you schedule time for self-care and other activities that make you feel good.

The benefits of organization and planning for mental health

That’s over one in four adults who are dealing with conditions like anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and more. And while many factors can contribute to mental health issues, one of the most common is stress. The daily pressures of work, family, and daily life can take a toll on your mental health if you’re not careful. That’s why it’s so important to make time for self-care. And one way to do that is by using a planner to organize and prioritize your life.

A planner can help you schedule time for self-care, track your progress toward goals, and stay motivated. Having a system in place to keep track of your thoughts and feelings can also help you be more mindful of your emotions and take care of yourself. So if you’re looking for areas where you can improve your mental health, consider using a planner to help you get organized and prioritize your life.

The benefits of using a planner for mental health

Picking the perfect planner can be daunting, but we’ve got you covered. The first step is to determine what type of planner you need. Are you looking for daily journals to keep track of appointments and deadlines? Some kind of weekly planner to help you stay on top of your tasks? Or maybe a monthly planner to keep track of long-term goals? Once you’ve decided on the type of planner you need, it’s time to choose a design that suits your personality. If you’re looking for a more traditional option, try a simple gratitude journal or mood tracker. For something more fun and colorful, try an Erin Condren petite planner or self-care journal as an additional option to the selection we have already outlined.

Once you’ve found the perfect planner, it’s time to start filling it out. Begin by reflection journaling: taking some time each week to reflect on your achievements, challenges, and goals. Then, start setting weekly intentions and daily habits. Make sure to track your progress with a habit tracker, and don’t forget to add in some fun shopping lists and gratitudes! Finally, don’t forget to stay hydrated by tracking your water intake with a water tracker.

By following these steps, you’ll be on your way to a more organized and healthy life! And don’t forget, if you need help getting started, there are plenty of resources and templates available online. So what are you waiting for? Get started today!

How to choose a planner

Consider the size & style.

If you’re going to commit to a planner, you want to make sure the size and style are ideal for your life. For example, do you want a paper planner, a digital version, a calendar version, a spiral notebook, printable sheets, etc? Do you want a pocket-size planner, one that fits in your laptop bag or backpack, or a giant desktop-size planner? The options are endless, but you need to make sure both your style and planner size fit your personal preferences.

Know your personal aesthetic preferences.

This one has to do with how you’re going to feel each day you pick up your planner. Find one that aesthetically fits you. You want to feel good about picking this planner up every day. The colors, the fonts, the spacing, etc. You want to like looking at this planner if you’re going to use it every day.

Look for more than just to-do lists.

Since this planner is for mental health as well as productivity, find one that caters to those goals. Maybe they have guided journal prompts, meditation recommendations, a place to write down what you’re grateful for, a beautiful quote, or something inspiring and uplifting each day.

Many planners start at the first of the year and are for one exact year. This makes it hard if you happen to be looking for a planner mid-year. I mean, we aren’t all waiting until the first of the year to get organized and improve our mental health. So find a planner which allows you to fill in the dates yourself rather than having the dates already printed.

What are your priorities?

Again, this is important when choosing a planner for mental health. There are unique planner options out there that include everything from goal planning to mindset training, to self-improvement prompts. Consider what your priorities are as far as improving your mental health, and find a planner that will help encourage you. Even a one-minute journal session on what you are grateful for as you start your day can truly improve your mental health.

It’s so important to take care of yourself first!

It’s so important to take care of yourself first! When you take care of yourself, you are better able to take care of others. One way to take care of yourself is to keep a gratitude journal. Every day, write down three things that you are grateful for. This could be something as simple as “I’m grateful for my bed” or “I’m grateful for my health.” Reflecting on the things that you are grateful for can help to improve your mood and reduce stress levels.

Another way to take care of yourself is to ensure that you are staying hydrated. Drinking enough water is essential for good health. So be sure to track your water intake and make sure that you’re drinking enough each day. Lastly, setting goals and intentions for each day can help you to stay focused and motivated. Be sure to track your progress and celebrate your accomplishments! Taking care of yourself is essential for a happy and healthy life.

Each of these planners has its unique features, but all of them focus on helping you to organize your life and prioritize your mental health. The best planner for mental health is the one that works best for you. Do you prefer a physical or digital planner? A Passion Planner with lots of space for reflection and gratitude, or a Happy Planner with built-in habit tracking? Or maybe a Bullet Journal is more your style, where you can customize it to fit your specific needs? Whichever plan you choose, make sure to take the time to use it regularly and reflect on how it’s working for you. You can also check out The Self-Care Planner by Simple Safe. They are aptly titled, as they are both simple and safe. Simple Safe offers eight different 12-month planners and one 13-month planner for your self-care planner needs!

Well, what have you been able to accomplish since starting to use a planner specifically designed for mental health? Share your success stories with us in the comments below!

California is home to some of the most unique and interesting places to stay in the world. From treehouse rentals to historic lighthouses, there’s something for everyone. If you’re a nature lover, you might want to check out the amazing treehouse rentals in places like Big Bear, Santa Cruz, or Sonoma County. For a touch of glamour, you could try glamping in a luxury tent in Yosemite or a yurt in Big Sur. These accommodations offer all the comforts of a hotel room. But, with the added bonus of being surrounded by nature. If you’re looking for something truly unique, why not stay in a castle? The Hearst Castle in San Simeon and the Castle Green in Pasadena are both stunning options. They’ll make you feel like royalty. And if you’re a water baby, you might want to consider staying on a houseboat on Lake Shasta, Lake Oroville, or even Lake Tahoe. Whatever your preferences, California has something special to offer. Now let’s talk about some of the unique places to visit!

Unique Places to Visit in California

Solvang

Reminiscent of Denmark, a visit to Solvang will make you wonder if you were magically transported to the other side of the Atlantic. Imagine windmills, rural Danish cottages lining the streets, and all sorts of quaint little bakeries and restaurants offering delicious treats to please your sweet tooth. Besides pleasing your foodie’s heart (do try out the fresh bear claw and the Danish kringle), wine tasting is also a big thing at Solvang. With picturesque vineyards lining the outskirts of town.

Another quirky activity, if you’ve got a bit more time to spare during your visit, is driving out of town to the nearby Ostrichland. Which is a farm that’s home to ostriches and emus and the perfect way to cap off visiting one of the most picture-perfect small towns!

Galleta Meadows at Borrego Springs

Galleta Meadows at Borrego Springs

Scavenger hunts are not fun. And Galleta Meadows is probably the ultimate place for one! One hundred thirty gigantic crafted metal sculptures depicting all sorts of creatures are spread over the town of Borrego Springs. And even though some of them can measure up to 10 feet tall, it can be pretty hard to spot them in the middle of the desert. It’s only a 2-hour drive from San Diego!

Among the sculptures, you’ll find dinosaurs, elephants, sloths, fantastic creatures, and gigantic insects. So you’re very likely to find your favorite animal during the search. Drive around in your car or rent an e-bike to cover as much ground as possible. And keep track of how many you can find!

Malibu Creek State Park

Malibu Creek State Park

If a day or two spent amidst nature sounds like your kind of gig, Malibu Creek State Park is the perfect place in Southern California for you. Set a mere 25 miles from downtown Los Angeles, this park offers some of the best vistas of the city and the Pacific Ocean below.

Located in the Santa Monica Mountains, this state park boasts amazing hiking and biking trails. All of which come with incredible views every inch of the way. Do watch out for wildlife, as these mountains are home to coyotes, deer, rattlesnakes, and mountain lions!

In case you’re keen on more adventures, you can also rock climb, explore the terrain on horseback, or kayak down its waters. Camping is also a big thing here. So spending the night is a marvelous option if you want to truly experience this gem of a park.

Lassen Volcanic National Park | Unique Places to Visit in California

Lassen Volcanic National Park

Lassen Volcanic National Park is one of California’s biggest hidden jewels. Despite its stunning natural beauty and unique features, many California residents are not aware of its existence.

One of the most fascinating things about Lassen is that it is located in a seismically active area. As a result, visitors have the opportunity to witness sulfur vents and bubbling mud points emerging from the ground. These features are similar to those found in Yosemite National Park, but Lassen offers a great alternative for those who prefer to avoid crowds.

Overall, Lassen Volcanic National Park is a must-see destination for anyone who loves nature and wants to explore the wonders of California’s natural landscape.

Pinnacles National Park

Pinnacles National Park

Pinnacles, which recently got its national park status in 2013, is another prime spot to visit if a hidden, off-the-beaten-track gem is what you’re after. Like Lassen, not many people know Pinnacles exist. This makes it the ideal spot for those wanting to enjoy the best of Cali’s nature without having to share it with crowds of visitors.

Sitting on top of the San Andreas Fault and two and a half hours away from San Francisco, Pinnacles is home to some wacky-looking rock formations. And two caves that you can explore to your heart’s content. Cave exploring here is not very difficult. Which makes it a great family-friendly activity for those who are traveling with kids.

Rock climbing is another favorite activity here. And you’ll find options that range from beginner lessons to multi-day adventures if you’re looking for a way to challenge your mountaineering skills!

While exploring Pinnacles, make sure to be on the lookout for Condors. It’s one of the best places in the US to spot them in their natural habitat. While they’re a critically endangered species, sightings are very common thanks to the park’s reintroduction program.

Capitolia

Capitolia

If you think Santa Cruz is pretty, Capitolia will get your jaw dropping right to the ground. This colorful seaside town is a haven for photographers. As the town is lined by clusters of picture-perfect houses colored in every shade of the rainbow.

Moreover, Capitolia boasts super laid-back vibes that brim that summer vacation feeling. And despite its discreet status, it still has a ton of activities scheduled on its calendar to keep visitors and locals alike entertained all day long.

Besides enjoying the beach during the day (New Brighton State Beach is a great spot), this cute seaside village offers plenty of eateries, shopping, and a ton of seasonal events like the Capitola Art & Wine Festival. Movies and the Beach, and the Twilight Concert Series!

Best Time To Go To California

The best time of year to visit California depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re hoping to hit the beaches and soak up the sun, the summer months of June through August are your best bet. These months are typically warm and dry, with plenty of opportunities for swimming, surfing, and other water activities. However, be prepared for crowds and higher prices during their peak season.

The spring and fall months of March through May and September through November are ideal for outdoor activities. During these months, the weather is usually mild and comfortable. This makes it the perfect time to hit the trails and enjoy the natural beauty of California. The winter months can also be a great time to visit California, especially if you’re a fan of skiing and snow sports. Just make sure to pack accordingly and plan ahead for any weather conditions or seasonal events that might affect your trip.

Which can be found in many shops and stands throughout the island.

For a fun day out, head to Upcountry Maui, where you can visit the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm and take a tour of the lavender fields. The farm also offers workshops and activities for kids, such as lei-making and lavender satchel-making. Upcountry Maui is also home to many farms and ranches that offer tours and activities. And fun activities too, such as horseback riding and petting zoos.

Maui is one of the most kid-friendly destinations in the Hawaiian Islands, with plenty of activities and attractions that will keep the whole family entertained.

Let’s look at some other activities in Maui you are your kids can do together!

Experience solitude at Makena Beach State Park

Located in the southern area of the island, Makena State Beach Park is what you’d call a pristine beach thanks to the fact that it hasn’t yet been touched by development.

Makena Beach is divided into two different sections. One of them being named Big Beach and the other Little Beach. Both are surrounded by tropical vegetation. And provide wonderful views of the Molokini Crater, Kahoolawe, and the lush mountains of the island.

While here, you may notice there are no hotels, shops, or restaurants except for a few food trucks. Making it a perfect beach to visit if you prefer to stray away from crowds.

Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm

Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm is a beautiful and family-friendly destination located in Upcountry Maui. The farm spans over 13.5 acres and features more than 55,000 lavender plants, as well as a variety of other plants and trees that thrive in the cool, misty climate of the area.

There are many kid-friendly activities to enjoy at the farm, including a walking tour of the gardens, a guided tour of the distillery, and a chance to make your lavender sachet. Kids will also love visiting the chicken coop and seeing the resident goats and sheep. The farm’s gift shop is full of lavender products, including bath and body products, culinary treats, and home decor items, making it a great place to pick up souvenirs.

Overall, Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm is a must-visit destination for families traveling to Maui. With its beautiful gardens, fun activities, and stunning views of the island, it’s a great place to spend a day exploring and enjoying the beauty of Maui. The farm’s staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and they are always happy to answer any questions and provide recommendations for other family-friendly activities in the area.

Hike at Haleakala National Park

Named after the volcano that towers over the park, Haleakala National Park is the ultimate nature destination in Maui.

Even though most visitors to Haleakala visit the park to hike the volcano (the highest point on the island) for sunrise or sunset, there’s plenty more to do at this wonderful national park than meets the eye. Including plenty of hiking trails, tons of wildlife-spotting options, and more! You can also camp inside the park if you choose. Just make sure to check out the pass process as I believe you have to have a permit or reservation before arrival.

We loved (Steve hated the entire drive up and down as he’s scared of heights and the road is very curvy with the cliff right on the other side of your tire without any railing) going up during the daylight and just checking it out. It was quite chilly up top — like 50 degrees and very windy — and it was in the 80s at the bottom. So be sure to pack appropriate clothing if you want to do this. We didn’t stick around too much to hike, we drove up and looked. And then went back down because it is above the clouds and we were freezing!

Snorkel in Molokini Crater

Shaped like a crescent moon, Molokini Crater is a small island located just off the coast of Makena Beach.

Getting to the island is only possible by boat. This makes it a perfect day trip to take to explore one of the most beautiful islands that surround Maui’s mainland. You can find many tours which take you over to the Crater and guide you where to snorkel and stay safe.

Thanks to the fact that the water around Molokini Crater is crystal clear and boasts visibility of up to 150 feet,  snorkeling here is an absolute treat. As you glide across the water, you’ll be able to see a wide variety of marine life. Including manta rays, parrotfish, yellow tang, and more! We went when Leila was 4 and didn’t know how to swim. So they have hard plastic boards with a plexiglass circle cut for the little kids to lay on and look into the ocean to see the fish. It made the whole experience amazing!

See Green Turtles at Ho’okipa Beach Park

Featuring clear blue waters and soft white sand, Ho’okipa Beach Park is a great place in Maui to visit for snorkeling, swimming, and sunbathing.

Something that makes Ho’okipa Beach stand high above the crowds, though, is the fact that Honus (Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles), loves hanging out around here. As a fun fact, ho’okipa translates into (“welcoming comfort”). Which the turtles seem to take very seriously!

For the best chances of seeing a ton of green turtles, visit Ho’okipa right before sunset. Around this time, they usually start arriving at the shore to settle for the night. But you may also be able to spot them eating, resting, or just hanging out any other time of the day.

Witness the Nakalele Blowhole

Located on the coast of northwestern Maui, Nakalele Blowhole is a striking natural geyser that gushes out water trapped under an underwater lava tube.

This strange phenomenon happens every few minutes every time the waves and wind are strong. But the best time of the day to witness it is usually during the morning when sunlight creates a rainbow as it hits the mist the water creates.

Make sure to keep a safe distance from the blowhole. As it can get pretty dangerous when the floor gets slippery and the water spews out at full force. We found it best to look from far away, on the mountaintop. It took a minute to figure out what we were supposed to be looking at. But I’m happy to say we saw it and loved it from about 300 feet away. The views are incredible so this is worth the trip!

Hike the Waimoku Falls Vía Pipiwai Trail

If what you’re after is a beautiful hiking trail that features a ton of variety when it comes to scenery, the Pipiwai Trail is sure to please.

This 4-mile round-trip hike will take you to a gorgeous panoramic view of Waimoku Falls. A stunning 400-foot waterfall is guaranteed to get your jaw on the floor. As you make your way to the viewpoint, you will also be treated to many other wonderful sights. Including a bamboo forest, swimming holes, lush vegetation, and a few other smaller waterfalls.

If you are looking for a place to stay in Maui, look no further than this cute condo right in the heart of Lahaina, where all the action is, with a private beach and clubhouse for guests! Book Here!

Drive the Road to Hana

Starting in Kipahulu and ending in Kaipo, the Road to Hana is a 70-mile-long highway dotted by some of the best destinations Maui has to offer.

Even though this winding road isn’t very long, it has plenty of incredible places to make stops at scattered along the way. Including lush state parks, tons of beaches, waterfalls, taro fields, and more. Make sure you plan at least a full day to complete the drive to get to fully enjoy them!

A few of the can’t-miss stops to make on the Road to Hana include Wai’anapanapa State Park, Wailua Falls, Maui Garden of Eden, Pua’a Ka’a Falls, Ho’okipa Beach Park, Twin Falls, Hanawi Falls, Wailua State Wayside, Hamoa Beach, Huelo Lookout, and the Venus Ponds.

Make sure you visit the Upcountry when you are on your way back. Or if you decide to drive the Road backward. You won’t want to miss out on Maui Winery, a great pizza place. And a fun country store that has pretty great food. We have attempted to drive it twice by ourselves. But just haven’t mustered up enough strength to do it! There are several tour companies to take you and that will drive you, so maybe we will get it done by doing that. But neither Steve nor I were brave enough with all the crazy turns and drops right out our window!
